Help identifying a French steam-sail ship

Post by araxas »

Hello,

I recently purchased a model ship of what I believe to be a French steam-sail ship of the line or frigate, propelled by a screw. The French navy underwent a transformation from sail to steam (hybrids) from about 1850-1870, and I believe this model dates roughly from that period. However, to date I've been unable to identify the ship it was made for/of. Maybe it was a "pitch" to the French naval authorities that did not succeed?

Unfortunately the name plate on the back of the model is quite unreadable/faded. It appears to have been about 7 or 8 letters long though.

I've uploaded several images of the ship at the links below. Any help would be enormously appreciated, as I'd love to learn/research more about this interesting model.
