Magnetic torpedo detonators

As I recall reading in John Campbells ? Naval weapons of world war 2, the MK XII Torpedo duplex warhead, was credited with being able to detect a ship equipped with a degausing coil from a depth up to about 6 feet below the hull. I used this as a basis for concluding that they could have passed under sheffield when set for a battleship target. I am not sure where the FX1400 detonated on hitting warspite under the ship or in the double bottom. Does anyone have any idea how far under the hull a duplex pistol would detionate the charge, I presume that it would near the edge of the hull, and so under the area in question.

Campbell says the device used at this time was sensitive only to 2-3 feet. The improved version had 6-10 feet.
