88mm naval cannon shell.

Post by Del7a »

Hello.
I'm from Estonia and I can't find any sources or info to identify the shell I found on our forums. So I though that maybe I could find help here.
I will be greateful, if you could help me with that.

On upper part is И.З
On the right side is 1838
On the left is some hybrid of russian G and F
Lower down is 20П and 19(anchor sign)13

Sizes are: 88x460mm

Could it be possibly product of Russia made by German style?
Or should I look for an answer around British 25-inches cannon?

Sorry for my such a weird spelling.I'm just a high-school student.

it doesn't ring a bell with me and 88mm would be unusual for a Russian gun. You can probably post your question on

Didn´t the russians had a gun similar to the German 88mm?

The Russians developed a similar weapon, the Pattern 1939 85mm which saw both AA, Tank, and naval use in WW2 and after. The earlier weapons were generally 75 or 76,2mm such as the P1914/15 76,2mm/30 and the P1892 75mm. One would not therefore expect to find an 88mm case with a 1913 stamp and Cyrillic letters unless it was made for use in a pre-war weapon purchased from Germany. The case length seems about right for a German 88mm SK L/35 of the era. Hopefully someone on the the ammunition board will have a better idea.
