Gun turrets

Post by Francis Marliere »

Gentlemen,

Destroyers main guns or cruisers / battleships secondary ones were either powered (US 5"/38) or manually operated (such as British 4.7"/50 MkIX). Could the powered turrets / mounts could be operated by hand, as a back up, in case of electrical or hydraulic failure ?

Thanks for your help,

My dad was a FC on USS Missouri. I recall asking him about manually training the guns. He said you could but it would take al lot of cranking-the bigger the harder it was.
