War Service Fuel Consumption of USN Surface Vessels: FTP 218
This document is now fully online at:

http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ref ... el-BB.html

This is a really fascinating and invaluable document for anyone interested in USN engineering and range data, as it provides actual, in-service fuel, consumption rates in both tabular and nomogram format, for a variety of displacements and fuel load formats.

It also gives the estimated maximum speed at full power for the vessels listed (which is almost every ship in the fleet)!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

Many thanks to the HyperWar team for this data!!!

There is a huge amount of detail here that would take a considerable amount of time to read and digest.

Some levels of comparison with battleships of other navies I think would have been useful in highlighting the salient points and make it a bit more readable......

Here's some roughly comparable data from HMS Howe:

The endurance figures use a formula that makes allowances for weather and fuel reserve so they are not comparable to the USN data, but the tons/hr figures can be used for a direct comparison. The data shows that Howe is less economical than Washington, for example, at lower speeds but becomes more economical at higher speeds.

Edited out irrelevant question about displacement.
