Ecuador's borders

Post by RF »

Some two years or so ago there was some press speculation in Britain about a possible escalation of the border dispute between Peru and Ecuador. Very little detail was disclosed, except reports of possible (unconfirmed) shooting incidents involving Ecuadorian border guards and a Peruvian incursion into the extreme eastern extremity of Ecuador.

Has any info on this been published in the US or in South America itself?

lwd, this article concerns the narcotics based conflict within Colombia rather than the definition of borders, as far as I can recall the border demarcation between Ecuador and Colombia has never been in dispute.

The issue leading to me starting this thread was that originally Ecuador included a substantial area of Amazonia to the east of the Andes. Peru then came along with a territorial claim which amounted to about 90% of the total then territory of Ecuador. There have been about three conflicts between these countries over this border, each resulting in Ecuador losing territory to Peru.

If the current conflict in Colombia does escalate as the article implies, there could be a serious situation developing given the strategic position of the Maracaibo oilfields in Venezuela, which are right on the border with Colombia. If Peru is drawn in via the border dispute then the scope for escalation is considerable, for example Peru's old rival Chile could get sucked in as well.

Neither is it clear what the position of the Obama Administration on this is.

I missed the emphasis on the border disput angle. Looking at it from that point I found a bunch of old stuff but not much since 2007.
What I did find is:

Don't know if it helps much.

Thanks lwd. The diffusing of the situation can only be good for all the countries concerned.
