Coount Luckner & his Seeadler

Post by _Derfflinger_ »

I see Amazon.com is showing a new book out on the adventures of Count Felix Luckner and his WW1 raider Seeadler: "The Cruise of the Sea Eagle - The Amazing True Story of Imperial Germany's Gentleman Pirate", by Blaine Pardoe. ISBN 1592286941

Has anyone seen this or read this yet? Is it any good?

No I havn't, but I do have a copy of E.P. Hoyts 'Sea Eagle' which is pretty good.

One aspect of Seeadler is the lack of a torpedo armament, I assume the ship was too small. If a concealed torpedo battery had been fitted would it have been possible I wonder for Seeadler to capture the boarding party from the British AMC, change flags and sink her with the torpedoes?

I don't think there is an instance of a warship being sunk by a sailing ship, if you know differently let me know.

The two Lowell Thomas classics from 1927 & 1929 are both great reads as well:

- "Count Luckner, The Sea Devil", 1927, Doubleday

- "The Sea Devil's Fo'c'sle", 1929, Garden City

Decent copies of both are frequently available via eBay, Amazon, Bookfinder, etc.
