Ship model resources

Post by Ulrich Rudofsky »

Modeling resources: The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is an unparalleled source of information for ship model makers and maritime historians. Our web site, and the Yahoo message boards, are always open for the exchange of useful information and inquiries.
Check out: http://www.naut-res-guild.org/ For example, one link is to the http://www.loyalhanadockyard.com ; here you will find a link to the Abe Taubman Collection of plans such as SMS Bayern, Baden, Seydlitz, Scharnhorst etc. Abe retired at 90+, but is still active. I had the pleasure of sitting next to him in Nov. 2005 at a dinner Newport News, when he received the NRG Life Time Achievement Award. Other good NRG sources are the links to maritime museums, and the classic “Shop Notes” and the professional journal “Nautical Research”. Our annual meetings are held at great maritime locations (Portland, ME, Norfolk, VA, Philadelphia, PA, and next October, in San Diego, CA). The meetings include a professional symposium, model exhibits from novice to expert, vendors of books, tools, plans, lumber, and model kits; recent events associated with the conventions were to maritime sites such as the US Naval Academy, a schooner-sail in Maine, the USN fleet in Norfolk as well as workshops and demonstrations of models in the hotel swimming pool. I have been a member for 20 years and I highly recommend to you all to look into joining up.
