The RTU also had a power followup for range and thus the radar operator would match the range via the cursor and then set the range rate so that the cursor would stay on target without operator intervention, as long as the target maintained a steady speed and course.

Thisis where conical scan or electronic scan/LORO hold a big advantage. With these types of scanning /lobing the target is fixed (locked on) by min (sum difference) signal, instead of max signal, and if the target begins to drift out of exact fix, the voltage amplitude will increase in the direction of drift. An instanous correction takes place and the target can't throw off it's hold.

POW probably did not have any M upgraded model radars in late 1941. It wasn't really until 1943 that the M and P upgrades were made available to other than brand new construction. The priority was to get as many hard to get radar sets aboard ships that didn't already have some radar. If the warship was already equipped it wasn't first in line to get the latest models.

Observing and correcting fall of shot for bearing (but not for range as long as the shots fell outside of 150 meters from the target) on 284M was very difficult. Bearing fix from the beam switching was indicated electronically by the blinking of the trace through a geneva mechanism. Shots falling off line could not be readily observed relative to the target. However, 284M was better than 274 for observing fall of shot. This may be why 274 was only slowy phased in, in place of 284M.
Entering a night sea battle is an awesome business. The enveloping darkness, hiding the enemy's.. seems a living thing, malignant and oppressive.Swishing water at the bow and stern mark an inexorable advance toward an unknown destiny.

This thread has veered so far away from the topic of Force Z, that everyone has , by now, to count only a few more weeks until the NEXT Force Z anniversary. :?
