German tug Arngast, Kristiansand Norway 1945

Post by k. hansen »

Hello,

I am new to the forum, my name is Keith. I would like to find a photo, and some background on the tug Arngast. My father was stationed onboard the tug in 1945, in Kristiansand, Norway. From what I have heard it was a diesel electric tub capable of towing a 10,000 ton ship at 10 knots, at sea, from what I understand she was built to move ships the size of Bismark, and Tirpitz, other than that I really can't find any information, what had happened to it after the war, from what my father said it was huge. I hope someone can help. Any information, or direction would be appreciated. Thank You.

Hej Keith!

Have you tried contacting Bugsier in Hamburg for information?
http://www.bugsier.de/index.php?language=uk
Since they had the tug for neigh on twenty years they might have some photos and some history on her. If you are lucky even from the time before she joined Bugsier's fleet.

Ciao,
Ufo

Hi! My dad served on the "Lenamill" around 1947/48 - later renamed "Wotan" and previously "Arngast". He has been asking me for some time to try to find a photograph of the tug but, to date, I have been unsuccessful. I wonder whether anyone can help? It would be much appreciated. Thanks in anticipation, Yvonne.

Some more history found on a model site.

1939 by the German Navy at the shipyard HC Stülcken son of Hamburg, a new two-screw ocean-going tug ordered. The ship was christened in 1940 in the name of "Arngast" and put into service. In early 1940 he was employed as a lead tug for the battleship "Bismarck" on the Elbe River and was also for later use, eg intended for the H-class. During the War of the tug moved to Norway where she received several light anti-aircraft stands and camoflage.
In 1945 the ship was a prey to the English in early 1950 and was given to the salvage Bugsier Hamburg shipping company. There it was given the new name "Wotan"
