following the first Atlantic camouflage schemes, as Admiral Hipper crew was using the HMS Liverpool ( a British cruiser ) camo scheme patterns :













NOTE : It is still debatable if the ship was on Blue-Gray tones,.. or only Grey tones as it seems HMS Liverpool probably was, ... so we made both views, .. the evolution in Blue tones, .. and an example in Grey of same camo scheme.

and here following the complete evolution of the Admiral Hipper camouflage schemes while in Brest, exacuting the second Atlantic cruise and than back to Germany :







than Admiral Hiiper went into dry dock for some refits.

and here after the refits, the ship on 1942, mainly re-located in Norway.

First at LoFjord ( Trondheim ) than Op. Rosselsprung with Tirpitz, than into Bogen ( Narvik ) and finally Op. Regenbogen with Lutzow for the failed attack to convoy JW51-B on December 31, 1942 that defined the end of Adm Raeder career and the end of the German surface warships.

So, here Admiral Hipper in Norway :

and here last years of Admiral Hipper.

First de-commissioned and located in Gotenhafen under netz.

Than commissioned again as a training ship and used to move German forces during Russian invasion.

Docked in Kiel, bombed and abandoned into the harbour.

Interesting to notice the radar and A/a guns evolution very similar to Prinz Eugen.

Again a special thank to Abram for his great work on those superb drawings we made together .

What are the colors for the January 1941 "Leaving Brest" and July 1942 "Operation Rosselsprung" camouflage schemes? I'm interested in finding the White Ensign Colorcoat equivalents.

I think they were the largest CAs in the world when they were commissioned. There is a striking photo of Prinz Eugen steaming alongside Dorsetshire after the war, where the German CA dwarfs the British one.

the colours were RAL 7001 Hellgrau the base light grey and RAL 7024 Dunkelgrau the dark grey camo patterns.

Turret tops were Red on RAL 3010 or Yellow on RAL 1003, as during Op. Rosselsprung she weared both top colours.

Noticing the images in 1940 under the title Seelowe, was Hipper actually available for Seelowe if the invasion of Britain had actually gone ahead in September 1940? I thought the ship was in dock at the time for engine repairs plus repair of the damage done by Glowworm....

Her repairs were completed as of 7 Sept. but during post repair trials she had a propulsion failrue at the end of Sept and spent October undergoing further repair.
