75 years since River Plate

Post by paulcadogan »

75 years ago a drama was playing out in the South Atlantic. The German panzerschiffe Admiral Graf Spee was "holed up" in Montevideo, Uruguay having retired there following a furious engagement with the British cruisers Ajax and Exeter and the New Zealand cruiser Achilles...

We all know the story very well...

The event was commemorated in New Zealand:

The town of Ajax in Ontario, Canada also marked the Anniversary;
75th Anniversary of the Battle of the River Plate Celebrations

The Town of Ajax will welcome veterans from the 1939 Battle of the River Plate in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the battle held off the coast of Uruguay during WWII.

Members of the HMS Ajax Association, family and friends along with men who served on the ships HMS Ajax, HMS Exeter and HMS Achilles will be visiting our community to participate in numerous community events.
