Z32 or Z33

Post by Dave Saxton » Mon Jun 29, 2015 9:29 pm

Scharnhorst operated with the 4th Z (fourth destroyer division) during Operation Ostfront. There is some confusion if the destroyers were:
Z29
Z30
Z32
Z34
Z38
OR:
Z29
Z30
Z33
Z34
Z38

Sources vary. Z32/33 was the one the two destroyers that tried to stay with Scharnhorst when Scharnhorst suddenly turned away when searching for the convoy at about 0800 hours. It never did catch up with the Scharnhorst and operated independently for the remainder of the operation.

Does anybody know if the correct destroyer was Z32 or Z33?
Entering a night sea battle is an awesome business. The enveloping darkness, hiding the enemy's.. seems a living thing, malignant and oppressive.Swishing water at the bow and stern mark an inexorable advance toward an unknown destiny.

According to this it was Z33:

The same site states Z32 was sailing in the Biskaya at that time:
