Northcape,
On page 307 of your scanned book, there's a reference to the author seeing tracer marked shells.
Any idea how prevalent tracer was in larger calibre shells?

Northcape,
Having read the excerpt again I must ask what book the extract is from.
Many Thanks

I believe tracer was the rule for heavy shells in WWII. There at all sorts of long exposure photos of ships firing at night showing the lines the shells made as they went off into the distance. There are first hand descriptions of the tracers disappearing into low clouds and then reappearing further down range. As far as I know, everyone used them.
