Antonio Bonomi wrote:The first hit from Scharnhorst with her third salvo reached HMS Glorious from 24.175 meters (26.450 yards), which is the longest gunfire hit on any enemy warship ever achieved.
There are two ships which can arguably lay claim to this honor. HMS Warspite has also been credited with the longest hit, in action off Calabria (Punta Stilo), in July 1940, by a 15"shell.

The record is recognised as a tie between Scharnhorst and Warspite
God created the world in 6 days.........and on the 7th day he built the Scharnhorst

I thought you guys might be interested in a post by Brad Fischer from another board. The thread is about a hypothetical battle between USS West Virginia and KM Bismarck:

Antonio Bonomi wrote: once ben hit ( Cesare by Warspite ) he overestimated the damages and disengaged.
After all, of all the italian admirals which have been in duty of the Supreme Command of the Fleet, Inigo Campioni had been the only one to accept a fight against an equally strong english force.
And in effect the damage occurred (the 15" shell passed through the forward funnel and exploded on the armoured bridge, port side) seemed more serious of what it really was.
Immediately after the hit, the smoke invaded the armoured bridge near the funnel and four boilers had to be stopped because of it, so that speed suddenly decreased to 18 knots.

Some italian fonts told that Warspite too suffered a direct hit or at least splinters damage during that engagement, but it had never been proved.

The destroyer "Fougueux", was hit by Massachusetts and Tuscaloosa from 22,000 yards, blew up and sank almost 7 miles north of the Casablanca breakwater
