I have for some years been trying to trace the British merchant ship Matheran, whose captain/bridge crew witnessed at long range the night time gun attack by hilfskreuzer Michel on the Greek ship Eugenie Livanos on either 7/8 or 8/9 December 1942, south east of Madagascar.

I cannot find any information on this ship at all, not even in the Lloyds Shipping Registry, even though it is the Lloyds Registry which refers to the report by the captain concerning Eugenie Livanos in the section listing shipping losses due to enemy action!

The Matheran is nowhere listed as itself being sunk, so I presume it survived the war.

Can anyone offer any ideas on this?

SS Matheran, of which there were actually 3 (Matheran I, built 1906 and 1917 mined and sunk off Cape of Good Hope.
Matheran II, built 1919 and 1940 torpedoed and sunk in North Atlantic by U-38
Matheran III, built 1942, scrapped 1963 at Osaka, Japan.

All three were part of the Anchor-Brocklebank Limited under financial control of Cunard. The line operated the routes UK East Coast ports - Suez - Colombo - Madras.

As an interesting side note, the Matheran I was sunk by mines laid by the WW1 Auxiliary Cruiser Wolf.

That's about all I know of Matheran

This looks like the ship I'm looking for. Could you give me the source of your info, as I say I couldn't find anything in the Lloyds Registry or even under Cunard.

Hi I am searching for info on the same ship. My great uncle Walter Couling was 2nd mate in 1939/1940. They sailed from Calcutta to Boston USA in late 1939, arriving there on 21 Feb 1940. Sailed the next day for New York, then Philadelphia arriving 26 Feb 1940. They sailed the same day for Norfolk, Virginia, arriving there two days later. The ship sailed from there to Baltimore on 1 Mar 1940. 5 Days later they set off for Norfolk. They sepnt 2 days there then off again to Philadelphia. They left the same day 12 Mar 1940 for Boston, the from there for London on 15 Mar 1940.
I have copies of the immigration declarations by the Captain for each port visited. I also have a full crew list. I can email them to you if you want.
