Armor on USN Mk45 5" gun

Post by Legend »

I am doing a project and I could not find anything pertaining to the protection of the current Mk45 5" gun. Does the USN use kevlar, reactive armor, homogeneous steel? Any help would be nice.

There's a nice drawing here:
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/weaps/mk-45.htm
which mentions a shield assembly.

Since it's not a manned space the armor may well be pretty limited.

No armor. Just thin steel weather shield. Some other parts of these ships may have had kevlar, etc. added for some protection, but other than aircraft carriers, which have some light armor designed as such in specific spots, no current US Navy warship has anything that would be classified as "armor" in WWII.

Wow. Mentality now is CIWS is gona keep everything away now is it? Well... I do have to admit the Rolling Airframe Missile is quite impressive from what they say the accuracy is... but then again... 20mm depleted uranium rounds can't be fooled by decoys can they? He he he...
