Hi Karl.

THX for your compliments. Tigers in all movies were not real and only the turret was remade to resemble a Tiger. Even in that great Soviet Tank Battle movie of Kursk.... I saw the movie with 2 friends in a totally deserted cimema in Delft in 1972!!!! I found it an awfull great movie with Von Manstein as real as he was, many Tigers in real Ukrainian landscape. When at the height of the battle with many fighters overhead the background turned blood red: very imposing and surrealistic!!!

Other real great ones:

16. Enemy at the Gates
17. Waterloo (pure for the masses of soldiers.....)
18. The recent Japanese movie about the sinking of the Yamato....
19. Pastorale 43 (Dutch)
20. Oorlogswinter (Dutch): the movie of 2009!!
21. Gettysburg
22. Soviet movie about German war crimes in occupied territory, later the Germans are locked in a bus and set aflame.... (with an famous German actor!), don't know the exact title/
23. The longest Day (ok then).
24. The Dambusters (B&W, old movie)
25. Movie about the Italian maiale attack on Valiant and Queen Elizabeth in Alexandria (title??)
26. Der Untergang
27. The Bunker
28. A bridge too far (has also bad parts).
29. Life of a soldier (Soviet movie)
30. The Doolitle raid: x seconds over Tokyo (with the surving Enterprise as the Hornet!!!)
31. Ran (Japanese movie)
32. Movie about the British attack on the Dardanelles, where every one out of an English village was killed....
33. Letters from Iwo Jima (TOP!)
34. Full metal jacket (Vietnam)
35. Hamburger Hill (Vietnam)

What I found horrible movies:

1. Saving private Ryan (except for the beginning, the rest is terrible....bad)
2. U 571 (terrible in all sense!!)
3. Where eagles dare (ok nice scenery near Werfen)
4. Guns of navarone (ok nice scenery of Rhodes)
5. Commando navarone (ok nice scenery though near the Tara Bridge/ Durmitor)
5. Kelly's Heroes (ok is humoristic)
6. Raid on Rommel (awfull bad)
7. The dirty dozen.
8. Battle of the Bulge (filmed in Spain!!)
9. Windtalkers (realistic scenes but later in the movie it is Hollywood all over again)
10. Cross of Iron (Sam Peckinpah, but terrible translation of Willy Heinrichs book "Das Fleisch ist geduldig").
11. Von Ryan's Express
12. Anzio

The Tigers in Kelly's Heros were actually converted T-34's from the Yugoslav Army as well as the real Shermans. The movie was filmed there. The Yugoslav Army provided nearly all the military equipment. While not acturate of real movie in any sense it is a funny movie with a great cast of actors. So don't knock it and Dirty Dozen for being bad WWII movies, they were comedy actions movies that just happen to take place during WW2. They can't really be compared to movies like Midway, A Bridge To Far, and others.

I felt that Cross of Iron was a very good movie; one of the best WWII movies I've ever seen. I wonder whether the poster was disappointed in liberties taken with the book and gave it a bad review for that reason. I haven't read the book so wasn't influenced by any such comparison and I think the movie is good in it's own right.

I wonder whether the fact that it doesn't present the German army as a perfectly infallible machine might have something to do with this. It's largely an infantry based story, and of course most of the German army didn't have all the nice weapons and tanks available to them that German army fans like to admire.

In any case, it's the story of small unit action where German soldiers are heroically fighting to save each other in the face of overwhelming attack by the Red army. Again, I thought it was quite well done.

Why is it bad that a movie is filmed in Spain?

Gettysburg is an outstanding good movie, like it very much. Is one of the movies that resembles the most it´s original book plot.

Untergang is also a great movie.

On the awfull side I do remember Raid On Rommel. Terrible, sadly terrible.

Rachel at the Gates... sorry, ups, Enemy at the Gates. Very good, indeed...

"Patton" and the "Battle of Britain" were flmed in Spain too.
You would be surprised how many movies were filmed in Spain back in the 60s and 70s.

This of course was back in the days of the ''Caudillo'' when Spain needed the foreign exchange from the tourists and film producers. Spain also had the advantage of its dry hinterland terrain, with its arid features very similar to the ''badlands'' of the American west, Utah, Nevada etc.

Battle of the Bulge was a bad movie because it used the Hollywood stereotype Germans: what a huge difference with the German SS troops of Saints & Soldiers
The Patton "Tigers" M47's with bow machine guns were nice to look at, but using them instead of artillery, shelling Ambleve is ......nuts!!
Colonel Hessler as a bad character of the real Oberst Peiper.....which had charisma.
The Panzer-song is presented in awful studio like surroundings, with stamping German panzer crews.
The panzer crews of Peipers Königstigers however were his veteran crews from Normandy...... so again no realistic portrayal.
The panzerduel on the flat area near the Meuse, the attempt to capture a fuel dump.... ok, nice try!

Midnight Clear and Saints& Soldiers were both filmed in Utah, which like Battle of the Bulge were imposed to be the
Ardennes......

Battle of Britain filmed in Spain: yes for part of the Luftwaffe airfields (Fliegerhorste) and aerial scenes, because the
Spaniards did not bother aircraft with Balkenkreuze and Swastika's. Was not possible to fly over Britain with these
CASA Heinkels, with their submarine detection radars visible.
One of these Heinkels later crashed in the USA with all crew dead....

Patton: a nice movie but it does not feel authentic...... nothing interesting.

Big red one: also the same stuff....... nothing interesting.

Valkyrie: German movie is nice but not a very impressive one.

"Die Weise Rose" is better.

"Rosentrasse" is also good.

"Charlotte" of Frans Weisz (Dutch movie, but with foreign actors) is really very good !!!

Remakes:

"Sand Pebbles"
"The Enemy Below"
"Sink the Bismark" - no romantic stuff
"Zulu"
"Run Silent, Run Deep"
The Cruel Sea"
"Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo"
"08/15"
"Battle Cry"
"Bataan"
"They Were Expendable"

That will do for now!

I don't think the film really intended to be an accurate portrayal, but clearly a fictionalised account. You can see that really from the role of ''General Gray'' played by Robert Ryan. He of course didn't exist, the major decisions weren't made at that low a level.

As per my opinion, I want to see the remake of The Fall of Berlin, Anzio, Trafalagar and Tushima. They are all great and I would like to see that.
I have already show all these movie and I am very impressed with that movies.
