I do recall that during the bus ride through the mountains prior to embarking on the boat down to Puerto Soller that the guide told us that an old dome on the mountain top had been used as a US military communications center during the cold war, I dunno if that was linked to the submarine base?

Don't they do connecting flights over there? Sometimes some pretty extreme ones turn out to be the cheapest over here.
