Radars of USS Chicago

Post by Francis Marliere »

Gentlemen,

I would like to know which radars carried USS Chicago (CA-29) in mid 1942. Thanks for any help.

Best regards,

As far as I can tell from available photos it had only two radar sets circa mid 42:

1) CXAM on the main mast head.

2) One Mk3 (FC) on the foretop main firecontrol director.

The next photos are Dec 1942 with alterations circled, These alterations are:

1) Moving the CXAM to the foremast head
2) The addition of two MK4 (FD) sets to secondary directors fore and aft.
3) The addition of an SG to the forward of the foretop below the crows nest.
Entering a night sea battle is an awesome business. The enveloping darkness, hiding the enemy's.. seems a living thing, malignant and oppressive.Swishing water at the bow and stern mark an inexorable advance toward an unknown destiny.
