Jutland battlemap

Post by Karl Heidenreich »

Always when a text refers to Jutland they offer the same two maps: the battlecruiser action and the main fleet action when the HSF did the "U" turn.
Which left a lot unexplained, as how the complete fleets were positioned before the action beguns, how the main fleets gathered around the meleé of the battlecruisers, on one hand, and how it developed into the night.

Is it there a complete map, or series of maps about the fight?

Best regards.

Hello, Karl...

I have a map drawing, supposedly based upon Jellicoe's "Grand Fleet 1914 - 1916" where the positions of all the units of the Grand fleet, (disabled, sunk or in engagement) is shown at approximately 1900 hours when the fleet clash was at the closest range. The HSH units however is unfortunately not shown other than as a U-turn in the bottom of the map. (along with a disabled Wiesbaden) I don't know how to post this or if I have a copyright attached to it. (How can I check this?) But I could try to send a copy directly to your mailbox if the adress is available somewhere at this site...

Now we all have the same maps!

It will be nice to have an animation of the fleets in movement.

Best regards.

If you can find a copy of Andrew Gordon's "Rules of the Game," you will get a great source on positions.

After the battle, there was a publication called, "The Battle of Jutland; Official Despatches," published by the Admiralty, and includes a case of charts, around 20 IIRC. I have a copy, but it is hard to get hold of.

If you get really stuck, let me know and I will try and photograph some of the charts in my collection. I have a variety of charts etc., and texts on the battle. I also republished "Grand Fleet Battle Orders; Vol III, Jutland," back in the late 1990's. It is OP now.

Cheers

Try interlibrary loans, what you want is "Naval Operations" (1923) by Julian Corbett, Vol III (maps); 46 colour maps of Jutland in a cardboard wallet.

Hi Karl!

I will sort through my charts and see what I can do. It may take a while as some of them are quite large and fragile.

As well as the Official Despatches, and Corbett's Vol III, I also have some German sources with charts.

Did you know that Scheer's history of the KM in WW I is available on line?

You must remember that each ship had several locations at any one time.
a. Where they thought they were
b. Where own forces thought they were
c. Where enemy forces thought they were, and finally
d. Where they actually were.
Whilst some are close, none correspond with each other at all well.

I have found Gordon's book "Rules of the Game" the best account of the battle including the background to British ineptitude. They were just lucky, in my opinion, that Jellcoe was in command and not Beattie with his stupid Flag Officer Chatfield.

Cheers
