High towers on Japanese battleships

Gentlemen,
Looking at some film of Japanese battleships on TV the other day I wondered if their very high 'towers' affected the stability of the ship in heavy weather or if it was starting to list after being hit with a torpedo.
What are your opinions?

Re: Wreck of the Scharnhorst

Gentlemen, As I stated in my last post on the debate about tracer shells, I have been reading a book about Scharnhorst by A R Jacobsen who chartered a ship in 2000 in order to find her - which he eventually did and employed a ROV and discovered that she was lying capsized with her bow completely bl...

Re: Tracer shells question?

Gentlemen, Still on the subject of tracer shells, I found this in a book on the Scharnhorst by AR Jacobsen where is quotes comments from many of the RN participants and some of the Scharnhorst survivors. This bit is a quote from Lt Ramsden who was in HMS Jamaica: "DoY fired her 14" and eve...

Re: What is Putin up to?

Hi Steve, Hi Wadinga, "As for the "encroachment" of NATO to the east, as soon as a little piggy gets clear of the wolf, he is bound to want to make friends with a bricklayer."! What a wonderful expression! I don't think anyone wants to seize control of Russia, I think the world j...

Re: Tracer shells question?

Hi Bill, I'm afraid I had to look up the meaning of Purple Prose', which infers that it is a sort of way of exaggerating or perhaps putting a more 'flowery' statement on a subject. While I would not disagree with the points that you have made, I do wonder why an experienced naval officer in the spot...

Re: Tracer shells question?

Gentlemen, To reopen the question on whether tracer shells were used on large naval weapons, I found this bit in 'KGV class battleships when describing the 'North Cape' battle. It stated "Lt Cmdr Crawford, high up in the flagships director tower, counted to fifteen after the guns split wide the...

Re: Why built useless battleships?

Gentlemen, Many thanks for your replies which certainly gives one something to think about the situation leading up to WW1. As I stated in a former post, I do wonder whether part of it was because the Kaiser ordered Germany to build a large battlefleet that could have posed a serious threat to GB wh...

Re: sabotage or carelessness?

Thanks Dave, It would seem that you are suggesting it may have been a deliberate attack, even though the Ukranian Government have not claimed it as so, I tend to agree, but it would have been a very daring move. But given the present state of some of the Russian forces I wouldn't dismiss the idea th...

sabotage or carelessness?

Gentlemen, Over the last year or so we have seen a massive explosion in a Russian arms depot, a supposed missile strike on one of their warships and now another explosion that badly damaged bridge, all I believe blamed on the Ukrainians by Putin. I have to say that it sems to me that it seems incred...

Re: Why built useless battleships?

Gentlemen, I'm a bit puzzled about what you mean when you say 'that's the official story line'. As far as the Navy part in WW1, was it not the Keiser who decided to build a fleet that he hoped would be a serious challenge to the RN and to pose a threat to the British Empire and in WW2 was it not Hit...

Re: Why built useless battleships?

What great war of aggression against Germany? If I recall my history correctly, Germany was the aggressor in WW1 and WW2. As for useless battleships, it was the threat of the possibility of confronting the entire Grand Fleet at Jutland that caused Sheer to run back home in WW1. Perhaps you might als...

Re: What is Putin up to?

Hi RF, I fear that both the Russians and the Ukrainians would object, I cannot see Ukraine settling for anything else than a complete Russian withdrawal, including from Crimea - which they won't do. I think the only thing that will stop this war is either the Russian people or the senior Russian mil...

Re: What is Putin up to?

Gentlemen, It would seem that some of Putin's 'advisors' are trying to push him towards using 'tactical low yield' nuclear weapons (whatever they are). I know absolutely nothing about these things, but surely they would emit some sort of radiation which would still be dangerous if the Russian army w...
