Re: Why built useless battleships?

The head of the History Department at Purdue, Gordon Mork, recommended the book to me. I was doing a reading semester on the HSF, pre-WWI. My brain might fire up eventually.

Don't bet the ranch on that.

I've been past the Big Ass Antenna Thing (BAAT) at San Diego, back in the '80s.

Re: Radio transmitters, a thought.

Do we know what they were using in Japan for military transmissions? I know Station Hypo and Station Cast were listening but did the Stateside facilities have a chance to catch any of that?

Radio transmitters, a thought.

Inspired by this thread: https://www.kbismarck.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9335&sid=8473600f1ca0145d51e14b07ff07e5ae The "war warning message" was sent to Hawaii via Western Union's 40 KW transmitter in California, the US Army's 20 KW couldn't punch through the solar flare "...

Re: Naval turrets being used on land

IIRC the guns from Arizona's after turrets were placed as defensive weapons. No need for a turret. The complete turrets were emplaced on Oahu. Also, the 8" turrets from Lexington or Saratoga were placed to augment Oahu's defenses. I'd forgotten about the Lex and Sara. T/Y. Somewhere in this mo...

See what wiki says: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Sportpalast

Remember, the sources and footnotes are breadcrumbs.

Re: Why built useless battleships?

A long forgotten source reported that KW II drew a battleship on a napkin during a diner date one night. Not known if he pursued that project. I suspect a psychological profile would read ADHD at minimum.

Re: Naval turrets being used on land

Bismarck's turrets weighed 1,056 metric tons, and were supported on roller track platforms. Below there were a series of levels that extended from the upper deck down to the bottom of the ship. https://www.kbismarck.com/armament.html#:~:text=Each%20turret%20weighed%201%2C056%20metric,the%20bottom%20...

"Red on the right, returning." Still used today.
