Re: Kirov vs The Royal Navy (in 1941 !!!)
If Kirov had appeared on North Atlantic on July 28, 1940 (i.e. one year earlier), Dharma6’s scenario would have been much more plausible. Since August 1939 (the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact) Soviet Union and Germany were good allies. They together partitioned Poland. Afterwards Germany could turn to the ...

Sealion II hits Yamato instead of Kongo
On November 21, 1944 Sealion II hit Kongo with 2 torpedoes of the 6-torpedoes salvo running at the depth 8 feet. Kongo sunk 3 hours later. However, Kongo wasn’t alone there as Yamato, Nagato and smaller ships were also present. Let’s assume that Yamato was a target of aforementioned salvo and: • was...

Unfortunately, I read only a translation in a Polish magazine.

Re: 8-inch Heavy cruiser Longest Gunfire Hit
I’ve never realized that there was so many battles during which 8-inch hits where obtained. However, the thing that really surprised me is precision of fire continuously presented by ‘Prinz Eugen’ and ‘Admiral Hipper’. Most probably some other heavy cruisers are winners of Jose’s competition, but th...

Re: 8-inch Heavy cruiser Longest Gunfire Hit
I have just checked some facts and it seems that Prinz Eugen may be a winner. According to Antonio Bonomi ("The Denmark Strait Battle") Prinz Eugen might have achived his the first hit on Hood from distance of about 19 000 meters (20 800 yards). It isn't directly stated in the analysis but...

Re: 8-inch Heavy cruiser Longest Gunfire Hit
Without detailed research HMS Exeter is coming to my mind. Maybe those hits weren’t the longest 8-inch hits in history but they may have some chances for the second place. Anyway it is interesting because Exeter itself was both the ship that was hitting and being hit. Battle of River Plate. Exeter h...

Re: Effectiveness of the Japanese Battleships in naval combat
Good summary, except I think the IJN battlecruisers were using bombardment ammunition at 1st Guadalcanal. I wrote about 14-inch AP projectiles because I had read several times (unfortunately I don’t remember where) that it is a myth that Hiei and Kirishima were firing HE or incendiary ammunition fo...

Re: Effectiveness of the Japanese Battleships in naval combat
I’m generally sharing alecsandros’ opinion on Japanese battleships’ effectiveness. 1. Kongo class. After their refit they were good ships suitable for escorting of carriers. In fact Japanese often used them in this role – just to name Pearl Harbor, attack on Darwin, raid on Indian Ocean and Midway. ...

6. Taiwan (the Naval Version of the Israeli Army: small, tough - as - nails; equipped with Aegis Destroyers). Only Japanese and South Korean Navies have ships with Aegis system (if we are discussing the Far East countries). Taiwanese Navy wants Aegises badly, but pressure which China is putting on ...

Re: Bismarck against BB-57 South Dakota
I find this discussion very interesting even if I don’t have a sufficient knowledge about different types of armor, AP projectiles and virtues of different patterns of armor arranging. I understand that this discussion has to be theoretical one as both ships never met. However I think that there is ...

Re: Japanese Victory at Midway
I think that a Japanese invasion in depth of Russa from the East would be a big mistake. Just look at a map and see the incredible distances. The distance from Manchuria to the Urals is three times the distance from Berlin to Moscow, and the Japanese army is not a modern army like the German or Rus...

Re: Japanese Victory at Midway
Not sure why you would think US lacks experience after losing at Midway. US would still probably attack Guadalcanal IMO or New Guinea. Russians would crush Japanese attack. Imagine the Japanese trying to deal with T-34s on the steppes. Their army just isn't suited to fighting the Russians. The Russ...

Re: Japanese Victory at Midway
I am going to present you two scenarios of developments following Japanese victory at Midway. First of them is rather conservative one and thus more probable to occur, while the second is more crazy but IMO it would be giving the Japanese some chances of not loosing that war. The first scenario. 1. ...

@Tiornu, Thank you for good words. I have actually bought The Shattered Sword, but I haven’t read it yet. Too much work and too many hobbies other than naval history. I would like to assure you that that book is placed high on my long list of books to read. Of course you are right that the Japanese ...
