US Navy to Decommission 24 ships, 1 is 2 years old!

https://www.warhistoryonline.com/news/us-navy-ship-decommissioning-2023-fiscal.html If anything summarizes the failure of the LCS is the wish of the US navy to decommission USS St Louis which only commissioned on Aug 11 2020. That barely 20 months old for a warship. And the Navy is still building an...

Re: Sinking of the Hood- did all the magazines explode?

Some of the Japanese battleships (thinking Yamato,Musashi,Kirishima/Hiei) ended up in a right old state. Was Japanese propellant similar to British? Hi HMSVF, From what I have been able to quickly determine, Japanese propellant was evidently a cordite formulation (nitroglycerine content of about 30...

Re: \what is Putin up to?

I am seeing many people on social media and the like stating that the Ukraine is not our problem, the same with Taiwan. Funny, but I am reminded of similar attitudes back in the 30's with Czechoslovakia is not our problem along with China. Putin would have made a fine 30's dictator and Biden is the ...

Re: Ships blowing up when the rolled over

What I find interesting on this subject is the high level of Japanese battlewagons that blew up after capsizing. With their high Pagoda masts, capsizing was far more likely to occur after flood damage. Kongo blew up after capsizing from progresive flooding from 2 torpedo hits in heavy seas. Both Yam...

Re: Recommended book on SMS Derfflinger?

Thanks Byron for your tips. I'll check out everything I can about the Yavuz. For the refit, which is done in Argentina, I had Derfflinger modified with Atlantic bow, turrets remain but 11" guns replace her 12", New machinery, bridge modelled on Scharnhorst, casemate guns fared in, catapult...

Re: Recommended book on SMS Derfflinger?

Thank you everyone for the wonderful replies. I've purchased German Battlecruisers 1914-1918 and German Battlecruisers of World War One from Gary Staff. And thanks Alberto on the Scharnhorst recommend. I really want to get Derfflinger's 1938-1939 refit technically plausible. Also in my novel, her es...

Recommended book on SMS Derfflinger?

Hey everyone. I was undecided on whether to put this request in this folder or hypothetical naval scenarios? I've written a naval fiction book, approx 125,000 words long which revolves around the battlecruiser Derfflinger. The story follows the career of a young Sub-Lieutenant from Jutland all the w...

Re: The Court Martial for the Denmark Strait

I would agree with Paul Mercer's point. In WWII, there were many instances of tactical withdrawals or not engaging at all by most nations. Spruance at Midway tactically withdrew his forces out of range of the Japanese to avoid a night engagement against superior surface forces. Lutjens did it with S...

Thank you Dunmunro. An interesting read. Especially the part about Mussolini depressed because his forces had not fought very well.

Cape Spada, why did the Italians retreat?

2 Italian light cruisers with Vice-Admiral Ferdinando Casardi in charge come up against 4 British destroyers and begins to chase them, not knowing they are drawing him towards reinforcements. An enemy light cruiser and another destroyer appear and open fire. It looks pretty evenly matched to me. So ...

Re: The Court Martial for the Denmark Strait

I have been watching this thread for a long time now but have never posted before on the forum. As such, I would like to thank Bill Jurens for his well though out and sincere post. For me, it is the defining post of this thread.
