Re: Bismarck range

We have already discussed this before. Bismarck´s machinery was not efficient, her consumption was 325 grams/hp/hour, whereas for example Massachusetts´ was 305. The problem with all german naval powerplants was the high holiday load. Only steam on for readiness to drive and turbines making 0 revol...

Re: The so-called "GKdos100"

Relative performance of KC aA(WW1) and KC (nA)(WW2)

At thickness 200 mm vs 15 cm Psgr L/3,7
Gg (Grenzschuss)at 0 degrees obliquity

KC(nA)approximately 740 m/s
KC(aA) approximately 680 m/s

The ballistic difference seems more marked at thicker plates.

Re: The so-called "GKdos100"

The trends I see in AP projectile design between WW1 and WW2 The german L/3,7 Psgr(15 cm, 28 cm 38 cm),(except 30,5 cm) form a family of projectiles like the L/ 4,4...4,6 WW2 Psgr. The WW1 / interwar L/3,7 projectiles can penetrate a caliber thick armour plate -quality KC(nA)- at around 570 m/s whe...

Re: Questions regarding to the performance of German 20.3cm guns

Adm 213... gave only general values from memory.

The individual values used in the performance charts differ slightly from these.

I have reproduced all values.

Re: Questions regarding to the performance of German 28cm guns

SK 28/C32 KC is a typing error
should mean SK 28/C34
and all values were preleminary values.
These values had to be adjusted to fit the Graphs

German naval plates 20210718_125808.jpg German Dehnung%(DIN) is not Elongation% used in US (imperial) terminology. (Lenght thickness ratios of specimen are different). And non naval plates( even very thick ones) may have the same composition but different physical properties. They were ballistically...

Re: Plunging fire

With regard to the splitted arrangement. Not every splitted arrangement of deck protection may reach the same or better results of ballistic protection as a single plate of same total thickness. British ballistic research gave requirements for the positive case 1) detachment of armor piercing cap (A...

Re: Plunging fire

The test was obviously done with 40,6 cm /1030 kg APC (Psgr) as the AOf data is only conform with the 40,6 cm projectile (the 38 cm projectiles reach 27 degrees AOF at about 27 km) Which was the range (if any) under which the belt/slope combination could be defeated according to these tests ? test a...

In the context of the evaluation of the horizontal protection "Battleship H", fears were expressed, that the horizontal protection consisting of a 50 mm upper deck and 100 mm armored deck could already penetrated at angles of fall of 15 ° - 25 ° (corresponding to a distance of at least aro...
