Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?
to 2) I took this from the book "Battleship Bismarck- A Design and Operational History of William H.Garzke Jr., Robert O. Dulin Jr., and William Jurens (moderator of this forum), with James Cameron, page 43. There it says: "The conning tower roof plates were 220mm of KC armor, the sides w...

Flyhawk 1/200 Bismarck
The Flyhawk 1/2000 is the smallest available commercial kit of the Bismarck and, despite the scale, it is surprisingly detailed.

Re: \what is Putin up to?
In the following twitter account you can find lots of photos of destroyed/damaged/captured vehicles planes and helicopters. The Russians are having heavy casualties, there is no doubt about that. https://twitter.com/UAWeapons Many also wonder why the Russian Air Force has not appeared over the battl...

Re: Bismarck's TDS so abysmal?
By the way, does anybody know the exact distance of this "gap" amidships?
I calculate something between 40-50 cm.

Re: Bismarck's TDS so abysmal?
Hello, In my opinion, the German designers were very well aware of this feature and didn't see this as a flaw. In fact, the same construction geometry appears again in the next H-Class battleships. Moreover, I don't believe, the underwater protection would have been improved at all fixing this "...

Re: Distance from armor deck to top edge of the barbettes.
Summarizing, the maximum distance at nominal values from the lower edge of the keel ( Unterkante Kiel ) to the top of the roof of Turret Anton at frame 192,55 is calculated as follows: 22 mm (keel plate) + 10,300 mm (from upper edge of keel plate to lower edge of Panzerdeck) + 6,390 mm (from lower e...

Re: Distance from armor deck to top edge of the barbettes.
Marc is correct, the Panzerdeck doesn't have sheer (no camber either). It follows a straight horizontal line from frame 32 to frame 202.7.
The battery deck above, however, has some sheer but not as much as the Oberdeck.

Re: Distance from armor deck to top edge of the barbettes.
Hello Mr. Jurens and Mr.Rico, one other point that came to my mind is that the drawing I have posted above is related to turret Dora (the one for turret Anton is not readable at all in my copies). Due to ship 'sheer' I just wondered now whether the 2 distances could have been different, with Anton'...

Re: Distance from armor deck to top edge of the barbettes.
It's interesting (at least to me) to note that the barbette cylinders themselves, rather than being cylinders per-se appear to be actually conics, i.e. the barbette actually slopes inward and upward at an included angle of about two degrees, making the top of smaller diameter than the bottom. This ...

Re: Distance from armor deck to top edge of the barbettes.
Hello Mr. Rico, based on a set of original drawings from November 1936 (Bundesarchiv), the distance should be 6.390 meters. My copy is very bad quality, but I read 7810 and 1420 mm (my underlined). BS_drawing_reduced.jpg Has anybody a better copy ? hans Yes, the plan I have for Anton barbette shows...

Distance from armor deck to top edge of the barbettes.
Hello, According to "Bismarck, Anatomy of the Ship" by Jack Brower, the distance from the lower edge of the Panzerdeck to the top edge of Anton & Dora barbettes was 6,500 mm. However, I have a new set of plans that put this distance at 6,390 mm. Can anybody confirm this? José http://ww...

Re: Range of Bismarck's guns
Keep in mind that the German 38cm shells followed very low trajectories and there was really no need to increase the maximun elevation of the guns; that would have required larger openings in the turrets. For comparison purposes, the British 14-inch gun needed a +40º elevation to reach the same dist...

Re: Range of Bismarck's guns
No disadvantage at all.
Scharnhorst guns had a maximum range of 40,930 meters at 40º elevation, and the longest hit ever obtained against a moving target at sea was from 24,000 meters.
