Re: Nuclear powered Battleship?

Wow. That is freaking amazing! If we had them the same size as the Otobreda... then we could have like twelve of them and basically be able to take out any number of cruise missiles any small nation would have! Could it possibly be elevated to the water and fire at torpedoes? Just sending a mach 7 s...

Re: Nuclear powered Battleship?

The 64 MJ system they are planning for the zumwalt and other classes, will require the ship to stop and focus all of it's generating power, 72 megawatts, into the functioning of those two guns. That is an assumed caliber of 6in. Your proposition for a smaller caliber is a good idea, but there isn't ...

Re: Nuclear powered Battleship?

Power consumption. By the time you put a full battery of railgun secondaries on the ship, the power consumption overdoes the amount being able to be generated by the auxileries... and by the point you put more auxileries in and make the ship capable of a full secondary railgun battery, the secondari...

Re: Nuclear powered Battleship?

True. So youre saying one on each side? That still leaves the problem of a swarm of missiles... the railgun can only fire around ten to twelve per minute due to cooling issues.

Re: Nuclear powered Battleship?

A small caliber electromagnetic gun? I think by the point that you put enough of them on the ship to be effective, the power output needed would multiply to a point that it would be cheaper to have conventional munitions, verses the fuel used up by the auxilery generators. The 155mm and the 8in, to ...

Re: The Railgun!

Ah! I see now! Thank you my friend. That makes this matter very clear now. I could only wonder why the coilgun is no good at acceleration, if they could fix that then it would be the better of the two systems for sure... Okay I see the problem now. The coilgun should theoretically be a more powerful...

Re: The Railgun!

May I inquire the difference between Railguns and Coilguns? I have an idea what the difference is but I would rather have it better set out from a more definitive point of view to set my position straight. So they are contemplating a large scale warship to mount a LARGER railgun than the envisioned ...

Re: KGV article on wikipedia

In 1940 and 1941 the Royal Navy and the United States Navy commissioned the lead ships of their latest battleship classes. The ships were nominally limited to 35000 tons standard displacement under the Washington Naval Treaty, although this figure was exceeded after the outbreak of WW2 led to the a...

The Railgun!

The Railgun has caught my attention recently, and while digging through numerous amounts of articles, I stumbled upon this one: http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/files/2007-05_JFSC_Thesis_NFS_and_DDG-1000.pdf Which I believe the BB lovers on here (me included) will like some of the conclusions dra...

Re: Photos of ships sinking

You know what would have been a good idea? Have the shells on a massive ball bearing in the inner wall of the turret, allowing quick shell position to the elevator and in the case of high rolling it would allot the shells to simply, slide down to the lowest point instead of falling into the turret w...

Re: Nuclear powered Battleship?

The Mk71 has a caliber of 8in/55 with a shell weight of 260lbs, RoF of 12, "lbs-pm" of 3120, and a range of 18 miles. The system was tested out on the USS hull back in the seventies... if I recall correctly they thought the 5in was superior to it. The new AGS has a 6in shell and is fairly ...

Re: Nuclear powered Battleship?

5" is much more effective at shore bombardment than 76mm, and battleships typically used their secondary battery for that purpose about as much as the main battery. US destroyers are equipped with 25mm systems as anti small boat weapons, as well as machineguns. I don't think the 25mm have an A...

Re: Nuclear powered Battleship?

The 76mm is Italian, built by Otobreda, and is a very superior system. I was surprised to find out that the Otobreda version of the 5in has a doubled RoF compared to the Mk45. Does the 20mm secondaries (Not Phalanx) have range and accuracy enough to be a decent AA gun? I didn't realize that the Arle...

Re: Nuclear powered Battleship?

Then what about secondaries? Several options of modern secondaries are available, though I was looking for more of the fast firing ones, due to the sixteen inch guns... no penetration needed for anything else. I saw the 76mm an option, along with the various 5in models, and the new Mk110 57mm...
