Re: Ideal battleship design
In terms of light AA 40mm is better than 20mm especially against kamikazis. For heavy AA 5" is better than 3". The 5"54 did have some advantages over the 5"38 but didn't have the rate of fire and due to the extra weight couldn't maintain what it did have for as long. Either woul...

Re: Ideal battleship design
I see. 5" were too light to use against Kamikazes, but 3" weren't.

Re: Marines in the Pacific vs Waffen SS
The Marines on Guadalcanal were very green. For most of them it was their first combat experience.

Re: Ideal battleship design
War time experiance would suggest replacing the 3" and 6" guns with 5" guns and suing 40mm for the light AA would be a superior secondary and AA suite. It leaves one a bit weak vs DDs although the 5" guns can tend to disable and or slow them down and allow the main battery to ad...

Do you think the US would have done those things if the Japanese hadn't invaded China?Byron Angel wrote:You seem to view these acts of the US as irrelevant; I view them as premeditated.

Re: Was US participation in WWII superfluous?
I imagine that the Russians, French, Poles, Belgians, Dutch, Greeks, Yugoslavs and a few others would dispute that Britain fought alone for almost three years.

Well, I bow to your expertise. Today's professionals must be far worse than the draftees in 1942. I'm through with this ... the field is yours.

Re: Bismarck vs. Iowa
Japanese AP shells had much longer fuze delays than anyone else's and were designed to travel long distances under water. They also tended to pass through superstructure without doing serious damage.

If you look at some of Dave Saxton's posts there is a lot of info in there.

Re: World best soldiers ever
Why does going in green and taking more casualties, and never really understanding your weapon systems make someone a better soldier, especially after having spent 10 years of your life in and out of combat like most of our soldiers do today?

It's not clear to me how one can expect a shell with a .025 fuze delay to travel 120 feet under water.

Re: World best soldiers ever
....their level of training was far inferior to today's troops, who are professionals and have more combat experience than most WW2 troops. This is where we disagree, for I am thinking of those US soldiers, conscripts yes, who chased the Germans from Tunisia to Sicily to mainland Italy and also fou...

Re: Bismarck vs. Iowa
My impression of that last engagement is that Bismarck shot better than the British until she lost her main spotting position in the foretop. She also seems to have shot well against KGV with the secondary position until it was destroyed.

Re: World best soldiers ever
The ''valid comparison'' is in putting these men in the same position as other troops before them, using their weapons and logistics. I suspect that the US troops in 1944 would be at least the equal, man for man, of today's US troops if the latter were put in the former's position. The Iraqi army o...
