Re: Pom pom with director Mk IV vs Bofors 40mm with Mk 51

During Pedestal Victorious had 5 octuple pom-poms modified to use 'joystick' control for one man training/laying control of the mounts, and the 6th mount was given Mk IV control. I am pretty surprised that 5 octuple pom-poms uses local one man control. As I believe as designed, director positions a...

Re: Pom pom with director Mk IV vs Bofors 40mm with Mk 51

Is there any information on how widespread the installation of RPC pom pom mounts is? I suspect a lot will be retrofitting existing mounts, but I haven't come across any records. Also, even though type 282 radar is pretty common, there seems to be very few mentions on its effectiveness on action re...

Re: Pom pom with director Mk IV vs Bofors 40mm with Mk 51

Pom pom director Mk 4 is a very complicated director that integrated Gyro rate unit (GRU) and a Type 282 radar. There are 8 members on the director sight itself: 1 Officer, 3 rate followers, trainer, layer, GRU operator, range taker. On the other hand, Bofors in USN service mostly relies on a Mk 51...

Re: Redesigning Bismarck

Basically, you can have a dual rudder/larger rudder with better maneuverability with an increase in drag, but then a jammed rudder is harder to overcome using the props.

Mysterious; - even the largest, most modern and last battle cruiser "SMS Hindenburg" had only 3 meter rangefinders when it was commissioned on 10. May 1917? SMS Hindenburg 3m rangefinder on tripod combat mast.png Original Source: https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/von_lans/35390372/91501/915...

Re: Redesigning Bismarck

Regarding steering issues, two main principles apply: a) In general it's impossible, or nearly so, to 'steer' with propellers only as to do so would require constant 'riding' of the propeller speeds etc. in order to adjust to slight variations in wind and wave. In the same way that one typically ha...

Re: Bismarck and European battleships vs.US battleships - hull shape and seakeeping qualities.

Hi All, This is an interesting thread with enlightening contributions from all. It is of course true that pretty much all major German warships (including Bismarck ) had their prows rebuilt with the so-called Atlantic Clipper bow to minimise spray and waves over the foredeck to address the s...

Re: How close was the final battle?

Hello all, no comment would be needed to above post. KGV Gunnery Control.jpg KGV Enclosure N.3_Section II_3.jpg Willingness to read and understand what is written in KGV GAR should be enough to judge whether there were problems or not with 284 personnel training (interpretation of echoes) and coope...

Re: How close was the final battle?

Hi Byron, 1943 284M was clearly superior to 1941 284. Your point about early war radar "art" is very interesting and may explain problems on board KGV on May 27, despite a well tuned radar. Germans too had severe shortages of personnel training in usage of radar equipment. I feel British ...

Re: How close was the final battle?

Hi Hans, A couple of offhand thoughts ..... Radar - Reading the original “user manuals”, I noted with interest the emphasis placed upon: > careful calibration of the radar device itself. > further calibration of the radar in connection with the gun battery itself. > the skill, training and experien...

Re: How close was the final battle?

Hi Byron, I agree: it looks like this is an a.a. aid only. I'm convinced that, in 1941, an 'average' 284 was limited to anti-ship gunnery usable range of 18.000-20.000 yards, as per precious 'Handbook' you kindly posted here (https://www.kbismarck.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=91770#p91770). Fact that,...

Re: How close was the final battle?

I wasn't aware that 284 had two panels: "ranging" scope and "warning" scope. I had always thought to 284 as dedicated gunnery radar, therefore only with a "ranging" scope. Hi Hans, My apologies if anything in my earlier post(s) has proven misleading. The "precisio...
