Re: How close was the final battle?

Hallo Dummunro, I doubt that Rodney and KGV would shoot very accurately while maneuvering. Did the AFCT get continuous inputs and thus provided continuous firing solution (like on the German C38 or the US Mark 37 FCS), or had it to be fed with data for every new calculation, i.e. were results gener...

Re: How close was the final battle?

My two cents on how close the last battle was: Not close at all! Two versus one is a clear thing on my mind: Lets say, Bismarck's shots get too close to Rodney's liking. Rodney starts to chase salvos, i.e. maneuvers defensively. This denies Bismarck to get hits on Rodney, while Rodney also has trou...

Re: Frederick Dalrymple-Hamilton report.

Hello, KGV 284 did mix her salvoes fall of shots with Rodney's and range was estimated constant (while rapidly decreasing) at 25,000 yards (see KGV GAR, Gunnery Control, point 2). KGV Gunnery Control.jpg Norfolk did not observe any hit before 09:04. Adm.WW report.jpg hans PLease try to read what I ...

Re: Frederick Dalrymple-Hamilton report.

Hello, unluckily there is no consistent account/reconstruction of May 27 engagement yet: - according to Rodney, they observed a straddle at 3rd salvo, but, when first range came from rangefinder, they realized they were 2,500 yards over target; - according to KGV, 284 initially mixed their and Rode...

Re: Frederick Dalrymple-Hamilton report.

Hello, according to Rodney narrative, between 09:48 and 09:50 first range came from main rangefinder and fire was corrected by 2,500 (!) yards above previous gun range, obtaining a good plot. Apparently Norfolk observation of early straddle(s) at 08:47-08:48 from Rodney was inaccurate (as these sal...

Re: HMS Rodney gunnery report for 27 May 1941

Re Fire Control Tables, IIRC - RODNEY - AFCT Mk I KING GEORGE V - AFCT Mk V Byron KGV class had a Mk IX AFCT. They also had fully stabilized director sights and RFs along with superior cross leveling gear, not to mention Type 284 and Type 279 radar. You are correct as to Fire Control Table, dunmunr...

Re: Gun precision / dispersion

UK notes.PNG The RN could use PRPL18 and Type 273 to provide accurate 10cm ranging to well beyond 30km, at the cost of losing Type 273's surface warning function. DoY, for example, used Type 284M3 and PRPL18 for ranging, with Type 273/L18 as the backup radar ranging system. An additional backup was...

Re: Bismarck and European battleships vs.US battleships - hull shape and seakeeping qualities.

Supposedly British admirals were seriously concerned about the effect of a serious sea stare on the American ship during the time that American ships were escorting convoys against a possible sortie by Tirpitz. Apparently the “coke bottle” hull shape - with a narrow bow and broad stern - was prone ...

Re: Essex class carrier flying deck

Hi. I would like to know the structure of the flying deck. From the AOTs I know that the hangar deck is 2.5" thick, and that the flying deck was made of plating covered by wood. What would be the thickness of the underlying plates and of the wood? Thanks in advance. The flight deck was 8lb ( ....
