Re: Poseidon Adventure

I have seen the movie and thought it was amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if it was inspired by Queen Mary, from what I heard from shows and Ballard's book she had stability problems in her early years despite being over a thousand feet long. Wasn't the old guy the grandfather in the original Willy ...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

OK, thanks Dave... that pretty much says that two KGV's would be able to disable a Yamato Class battleship for the remainder of the war during a night fight... But what about during the daytime? If as Karl said, luck was a factor in our little scenario, then we would never stop arguing. Now let's ju...

Re: Bismarck Model in an Aquarium

Sweet. I do notice though, that the hull is intact. There were missing sections of the outer hull from the impact with the bottom on the actual wreck.

Re: Bismarck Model in an Aquarium

 ... Supercool! I must say that is amazing. Wouldn't it be sweet to have an actual, unbattered model floating above it? That would be like Before and After of the poor ship. Again, that is awesome

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

 Sooo... Your saying the ranges the British were at on May 27, 1941 were unrealistic? If they weren't then it is hard to imagine why the crew had to scuttle to make their ship go down and out of British hands. Karl, I meant to mention that in my original post but forgot and didn't wan...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Yeah. The thing is, the 14 inchers the KGV's used weren't up to the challenge of penetrating true battleship armor... They had a really hard time taking down Bismarck. If memory serves the Rodney with her 16 inchers was the only ship present that actually was able to penetrate the hull armor, thus t...

Re: USS Ticonderoga vs. USSR Kirov

In an over the horizon duel I believe the winner would be the one who is able to get missiles into the enemy ship faster, and who can defend better... The Tico has Phalanx which could knock out most of the missiles, but does the Kirov have any CIWS's? If it does, then it has just as much a chance as...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

Though they did not say how fast it needs to go to launch aircraft, a Nimitz class can go fast enough to launch planes with one screw still turning, I am postitve of that fact. I heard it on that series Carrier on the Discovery channel. This is why I said one of the two primary areas the subs should...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

Alright, now that I think about it Shinano was designed a BB and it is improbable that they removed the armor for speed. I thought we agreed nukes wouldn't be brought into this scenario. A nuke can kill anything on this earth besides cockroaches within a mile of the damn warhead's location. Anyways,...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

:D Thanks for backing me up. I have to say that it would take, yeah, about six or seven on one side to do in a Nimitz class. We have to remember these things are larger that Shinano, have better armor most likely, and have modern watertight systems that WORK. On the flip side torp tech has increased...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

It was the Shinano's first day sailing and nobody on that giant could have imagined a torpedo attack at the time. She was brand new, a grass green crew, low morale probably, not even completed fully and no aircraft at the time to my memory. I don't think the mechanisms on her bulkhead doors were wor...

Re: Obama or McCain - who would you vote for?

 Dude, I just heard that Sarah Palen is going to my high school for one of her rallies. Of the four, I think she is the worst person to enter office, though I was thinking of going since how often does an electee make a visit two blocks down from your house? It is going to be a rat's nest at ...

Re: Tirpitz accompanies Bismarck in Operation Rheinubung

I have to say: YES, if we really joined the war at that point, then the Royal Navy is not alone, and we send our BBs out. With the USN on thier side I really think they would be comftorable as they could be in a war with letting two off to the Pacific...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

Okay, sorry about the thirty torps, thought I heard it on a show like that, might have been total hits, torps and bombs... I am pretty sure the Nimitz class carriers have double hulls and other forms of TDS, I bet someone could find some good info on that. We have to remember that these ships are hu...
