Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau

Really? And what are you going to do once you find out it's a knot too slow while the war is going on? Send it back under warranty? Reject the ship? Sell it to a third party? Or you could accept the results from the shake-down cruise and deploy it. Once you've ironed out all showboat problems, you'l...

Re: 1/350 HMS Hood, scratchbuild

Looks like a good model, some issues we recently found have been included. A few errors here and there but nothing very difficult to correct. The HMS Hood site has a good article what to correct on the model.

Re: 1/350 HMS Hood, scratchbuild

Oh sure, I'm not in a hurry ;) It's a lot of work and I had a few other very time-consuming projects (PhD, moving and refurbishing the house and garden and such). But she's nearing completion, I guess. My second etch set should be delivered the coming weeks. Such a set takes a lot of time as well, r...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau

I also think that would be unlikey but not for mining or torpedo damage (I wouldn't trail a vessel in such an area). I doubt you want seawater in your fuel tanks. But running at a trial depth is not uncommon. Nearly all ships have a trial draught and several service draughts during the design.

Re: 1/350 HMS Hood, scratchbuild

Hi Karl, indeed long time no post. Still discussing Bismarck? This model started as the WEM kit, got gradually more and more scratchbuilt and is now fully so. Well, there's a WEM hull deep down. So, that's why 1/350. But my next model will be this scale as well. As far as detail is concern...

Re: Modeling parts

@ Byron: There is no moderation and some members are continuously fighting over minor issues. There are many modeling fora, non of which explode on a weekly basis. It may seem nice there are some well-known modeling people frequently posting on SN, but I find the forum generally unpleasant. So, if y...

Re: Modeling parts

I wouldn't advise that site at all, by the way :quiet: For a general questions, I would recommended a site as modelwarships or similar. I would try John Haynes fittings here, for example . He has a separate site but I can't reach it at the moment. There's a small range of 1:100 fittings plus general...

Re: Asymmetric Propellers

"producing harmonics" is something that every propeller does, though the (first) harmonic frequency is shaft rpm times number of blades and thus goes up with more blades. With an increase in blade number, the loading per blade is less and you induce lower pressure fluctuations in the far f...

Re: White Lines on Prinz Eugen's Deck

I'd love to give a reply with some intrinsic value here, but the sheer number of posts filled with conjecture, wishful thinking, or otherwise completely baseless assumptions is just too much to keep up with. I'd never thought that the way of argumentation of people trying to, say, disprove the theor...

Re: Denmark Strait - Run ?

If Bismarck could make 30 + knots with less power available than Scharnhorst, it would have been, quite simply, miraculous. Without going into detail about Bismarck vs Scharnhorst, it is well possible for comparable ships that the heavier and longer vessel has a lower total power requirement for th...

Re: Denmark Strait - Run ?

I also read that thread and I have to remark that estimating ship speed from seemingly (but actually not) comparable ships is not very accurate. Also, the Holtrop & Mennen estimator follows from the older publications and is certainly not up to speed with the more modern database and knowledge o...

Re: Two Photos

Quite possibly the German Navy thought the entire war was an exercise because some bureaucrat at the head office failed to pass on the memo. That would certainly explain for the lack of flash gear and helmets during Cerberus and the Denmark Straight.
