Re: Practical ranges
At ranges where the side armore must per perforated to inflict significant damage, it takes many hits to sink a BB, even an old one. But at long range, all hits will perforate the deck armor. In addition, the target area is much larger than at short range. Some aspects to consider: Long range hitti...

Re: Alternate Bismarck Campaign
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/4858/plunginghits.jpg See the relationship between required striking velocity and impact obliquity. Free falling bombs do not require that much velocity to attain penetration if they happen to hit at lower obliquities (which is the case, once they hit the deck). The...

Re: Bismarcks armour
Nobody knowlegable has claimed such a thing. Nonetheless, what some ballistics experts, including the German experts of the time such as B Hoyer, are talking about is a system referred to as the "scarp triangle" rather than a single piece of steel. The belt was only one componant of the o...

Re: Best U.S. cruisers at the river Platte
An interesting read but apart from aspects of speculation I find it interesting that everybody attempts to explain AGS decision making processes from a gunnery perspective, yet Langsdorff had a determined torpedo background, beeing member and CEO of the Torpedoversuchsanstalt earlier, commanded tor...

Re: Question about RPC firing while turning the ship
RPC for training the turrets was not always and in all fast BB's abiable. Acc. to operational experiences of US fast battleships, referring to after action reports of BB-59 off Casablanca, there was RPC for elevation but not for train in 1942.

Re: Medium thickness KC/n.A. -comparative data
It´s possible that intact APC projectiles (those not stripped off their windscreens, hoods or AP-caps by previous impacts) will have somehow less penetration against thick homogenious armour than similar sized, similar heavy uncapped AP-schot. Against thinner homogenious armour (such as is not capab...

Re: Medium thickness KC/n.A. -comparative data
That's a good question. I don't know the answer. Do You happen to have indication for Wh applications on the slopes? Though admittently, my concern here was the KC armoured turrets and barbettes of the HIPPER's primarely. The 8inches gun trials don't allow conclusions to be drawn for large calibre i...

Medium thickness KC/n.A. -comparative data
When considering the protective value an the merits of medium thickness KC/n.A. armour, such as installed in BISMARCK´s upper side belt (145mm), turret slope (180mm) or barbettes, turret´s and CT of the ADMIRAL HIPPER class, little actual cross reference data i aviable. The most important primary so...

Thanks Dave for going into the trouble of looking for the file.
I know the question doesn´t necessarely belong to an informal board though it was part of my interest on that issue.
best regards,
delc

Re: Washington
The source is a USN Research Lab study released in 1945. It studied the internal brittleness problem of 17" thick Class B plates. This study indicated a 20% decrease in ballistic resistance to standard. I believe the baseline for the standard is thin homogenous armour of 6-inch or less. So it'...

Re: Washington
Class B plates of such thickness did not make an ideal substitute. Homogenous plates of such thickness suffer from problems of the interior portions remaining too hot for too long during the cooling proccesses. The USN Research Lab found that the ballistic resistance of such plates was down about 2...

Re: 3 German battleships in May 1941.
Wrt RENOWN + a DD flotilla vs S&G: only one 15"hit was achieved on GNEISENAU, actually an 'over' rather than from a straddling hit which happened to strike the spotting top, disabling one RF position, incl. RF. In return, RENOWN achieved 2 11 " hull hits from straddling salvos from bot...
