Size of French Naval Artillery

I've been reading a book by Chris Durbin called "The Colonial Post-Captain" wherein he states that some French Ships of the Line had 52 lb guns. That seems frankly ridiculous to me and I thought it might have been an editing mistake but it's repeated later in the book. It's fiction, but li...

Re: Tacking & Wearing

Yes! The fore and aft sail located in the mizzen mast. But it is not named "mizzen sail" because that would be a square sail located in that mast, which most ships of the sail era lacked, and came in use on the finals years of the sailing ship. Huh. I dispute that most ships of the era la...

Re: Tacking & Wearing

Hi Byron, Most interesting, I suppose how quickly it can be done depends entirely on the training of the crew and the competency of the officers, presumably in the days of sail the RN were some of the best! With regard to the word 'Spanker', is that what is often referred to as the 'Mizzen'? Yes! T...

Re: Identify indicator

I believe the target bearing is indicated by the index marker above the own ship circle, with the bearing indexed on the circle.

Re: Battleship Command: Scharnhorst

The first thing that occurs to me is you are engrossed in firing at someone and torpedoes are sighted heading for your ship. Do you switch to the bridge and avoid the torpedoes or continue shooting? If you switch to the bridge, do the guns then stop shooting at the target? I'm afraid there will be l...

Re: Identify indicator

What you have circled in red is to the right of switches 11, 12, and 13. It isn't shown in your diagram and is not the thing you asked the meaning of. Item 10 is to the left of the three switches 11, 12, and 13 and is not in your photo, so "Ausk. Schiffswellen" is not relevant to your que...

Re: projectile angle of attack

Well, since they do follow the trajectory fairly closely, they must all have nearly the "correct" spin.

None of the ACW ironclads were seagoing ships. They were all coastal and riverine monitors.

Re: Radio Finger Printing (RFP)

I was told by a pilot of Grumman Tracker during Malvinas/Falklands war, that onboard they have installed an oscilloscope to graph the radar signals of the RN ships, and that the form of the signal was taken by an instant Polaroid camera to have it filed for future identification. Regards When I ser...

Re: Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way

Indeed, and hopefully it will result in improved safety margins for tourist craft like that one. Apparently the USN ocean surveillance system heard the implosion and reported it to the Coast Guard commander of the operation, but he felt they should continue to search in the hope that it was a false ...

Re: Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way

Retired USN here. Banging vigorously when you don't know if someone is actively listening would use up O2 quicker. Would NOT recommend. Retired USN also. If you DON'T bang, it will probably take them weeks to search the whole area and you will probably suffocate. IIRC recommended is to bang for a m...

Now I realize that the crew can´t get out without outside help!
Which probably means they could suffocate on the surface!
