Re: Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
I'm actually surprised there hasn't been reports of a destroyer in the search area. Many of them have VD sonars. Also, while their active sonar wouldn't be very useful in finding the DSV, it is very powerful and would serve as a morale boost and encourage more banging from the DSV. It is possible th...

Re: Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
When I served in submarines in the 70s we had a VLF "football" antenna that could be deployed like any other mast, but it's reception wasn't as good as the floating wire antenna which was trailed out in the ship's wake and was quite long. Neither could be used to transmit. We also had unde...

Re: Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
I'm not very hopeful. First, if they were still alive I would expect them to be making noise; if nothing else banging on something. Secondly, how can they help them even if they are still alive at that depth? I'm afraid the only hope is for them to be on the surface somewhere, in which case they sho...

Re: Shipborne aircraft - Walrus and Arado AR196 - Lost Opportunities?
Hello Steve Crandell. I don't recall stating " that Bismarck had greater range than KGV " in this Post Subject. I have stated it in another Post Subject titled 'Hypothetical: The British detect Bismarck with a ship-borne Walrus at 0900 on 25 May 1941.' The figures I cited there were as fo...

When stating that Bismarck had greater range than KGV are you taking into account that Bismarck's forward tanks were inaccessible due flooding caused by the forward hit by PoW? Also, some of the midships storage was contaminated by the PoW hit below the belt amidships.

Re: Pom-Pom guns carried by HMS Durban
Huh. From here it appears that ALL white Australians are immigrants from the British Isles. So why would some of them call the more recent ones by a derogatory name? Come to think of it we in the States have derogatory names for immigrants who are more recent than the rest of us, so go figure. The h...

I would presume that the outcome would have been the same; just a bit sooner. That doesn't seem as interesting to me as what actually happened.

Re: Shipborne aircraft - Walrus and Arado AR196 - Lost Opportunities?
It has always amazed me that Bismarck's aviation department didn't inspect the catapult thoroughly after the boat nearby was wrecked. It just seems like common sense to test that system, which might be crucial later. Most things like that could have been repaired. Very odd, IMO.

Re: Chaser Gun on Paddle Steamer
The inability to fire forward reminds me of a visit to the battleship New Jersey . There was a huge antenna mounted on the deck near the bow. I asked the docent how the main battery could be fired straight ahead, and he answered that the main battery was never fired straight ahead. That antenna did...

Re: projectile angle of attack
I think that if there was no air resistance, that is what would happen. Bullets don't do that though; they tend to orient themselves to coincide with the path, and I think that is because of the sharp nose.
Hopefully someone with a better ballistics background can follow up on this.

Re: Chaser Gun on Paddle Steamer
If you google USS Kearsarge civil war you can follow the image links to some good pictures of her heavy Dahlgren guns. She carried two of them. They had more elaborate tracks so they could actually be moved close to one side of the ship for firing, but they were stowed on the centerline. Zackly, St...

The Baron could have heard that statement later in the wardroom from someone else. He may even say that in his book. Admittedly hearsay, but this isn't a court of law.
