No, not damaged - sunk:

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread166587/pg24

A replacement was secretly built in the US and everyone who knew the truth was bought off.

Sounds plausible to me...

Try looking at the information on the Dumaresq on the Dreadnought Project website:

http://www.dreadnoughtproject.org/

The two instruments basically do the same thing - calculation of the rate of change of range and bearing.

Guessing, it's from the fact that draft increased four and a half feet aft due to progressive flooding from the magazines (cf four feet forward when 1400 tons taken from the 1916 mine hit).

Try interlibrary loans, what you want is "Naval Operations" (1923) by Julian Corbett, Vol III (maps); 46 colour maps of Jutland in a cardboard wallet.

Here we go again. Obviously if there are lots of decimal points in the results it must be an accurate answer. And while we're on the subject of what English phrases actually mean: "DK Brown agrees with the penetration calculations of German KC given by Krupp...'German claims for penetration [of...

"at any range where they can hit"

Thank goodness there are SOME numbers we can all agree on.

Sorry, I was thinking about the unreliability of the numbers rather than picking on an individual response, my apologies if that's the impression I gave. My perspective was that the notional difference in velocities is well within the margin of error for calculated striking velocity, and well within...

Being picky, but "At 16000 yards (not meters) with a new liner the 38cm just fails to penetrate, with the limit velocity being 1897 fps, and the shell hitting at 1889 fps" by no stretch of the imagination indicates that penetration is "improbable", it implies that it's very proba...

If you get hold of a map of Port Stanley and environs you'll see that wasn't an option.

And of course Pollen was prepared to use the threat of publishing defence secrets if they didn't pay him large amounts of money, which even in the world of defence contracting is stretching the ethical boundaries somewhat.

The reasons why they bought the Dreyer are complex but can be boiled down to the fact that he was prepared to work with the navy and work within the standard framework of naval procurement, and Pollen wasn't.

There's not much point posting a link that has restricted access. Perhaps you could summarise the principle arguments.

(It should also be pointed out that the author of the critique cannot by any stretch of the imagination be considered impartial in the debate.)

Chucking fire control into the mix anyway - the I's system had a top limit of about 16,000 yards and would really work best at perhaps 12,000 or less (see for example the ranges on the day) while S&G would expect to function effectively at more than 20,000. The I's were fairly comfortably protec...
