Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

NAaB allows you to graph the output: http://www.sfu.ca/~dmunro/naab_graph.jpg This is for a 14"/45 at 2483fps + max range = 38600yds, so the deck penetration is somewhat lower than might be expected at a typical service MV, since the penetration figures become very sensitive to small changes in...

Re: RFC equipped Yamato vs. Iowa

Bismarck radar at DS was not working properly, remember, that´s why Prinz Eugen was leading the formation. Baron Mullenheim von Rechberg does not say anything about Schneider targeting by radar, just using the opticals. Best regards. Bismarck's forward radar was out of service, but her after unit w...

Re: RFC equipped Yamato vs. Iowa

Bismarck had radar at DS, on her after FC station, so she had radar ranging assistance, unlike PoW which scored her 3 hits with optical FC only. During the 2nd engagement PoW straddled Bismarck at over 30000yds, using only optical FC, yet Bismarck's own optical directed FC was so poor that PoW didn'...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

If the 16" didn´t penetrate (and we are talking the Iowa´s 16") then why worry about the other, lesser ones. They can´t. As I read the passage, Okun was stating his opinion that if you hit one at point blank range with a 16"/50 it might jam the turret. Dave was opining that 14" ...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

The KGVs...would have to split up so they had a chance to hit Yamato's turrets on the back or side armor. They might be able to silence her before they ran out of ammo. With the characteristic mechanical failures known to have plagued the quad turrets of the KGVs, it is not unreasonable to assume t...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Just looked at the penetration tables something funny is happening between 32,000 and 35,000 yards. The velocity is increasing slightly which is reasonable and the angle is improving some (~9 degrees) but penetration is almost doubling! This seams to be independent of gun. Could be real I just don'...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Well according to navweapons the KGV's can't penetrate more than about 6" or so at least out to 32,000 yards (see: http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNBR_14-45_mk7.htm) Yamato had a 9" deck so her magazines are probably not vulnerable except possibly at extreme range. I posted a link to som...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

:stubborn: I'm sorry, my fault, I didn't phrase that correctly the first time. In this confrontation we see two KGV's coming in to challenge the Yamato. I meant if the 18inchers hit one of the two bow turrets, (one of them being an enormous quad) there is a fair chance that the magazines will blow ...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

The BB to BB range of the 284M was officially 29,000 yards. Historically the Duke of York's 284M first detected Scharnhorst at 35,000 yards, but the amplitude of the pip was too small to hold the target and determine the bearing until the range closed to about 26,000 yards. If we take into account ...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Yamato would have great difficulty in outranging KGV, if she was using optical ranging only. It would require exceptional visibility for Yamato's optical RF's to be effective past the 36 to 38000 yd maximum gun range for KGV. Type 284m radar, if available, would have given KGV a big edge at long ran...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

It has to be a small fight. Harwood used it against AGS. I'm not talking about putting two ships on opposite sides of the target, just separated by 90* or less. I can't imagine how Yamato could isolate one ship in such a situation. If she turns toward one, that ship turns away. It's that simple. Ob...

Re: Surface ships attacking carriers.

I know it has only happened very few times and it may have been chance in each case that surface ships got a chance to fire on carriers. If you were going to deliberately try and attack a carrier in the WW2 period how would you go about doing this difficult task? I am guessing that you would do thi...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

 Sooo... Your saying the ranges the British were at on May 27, 1941 were unrealistic? If they weren't then it is hard to imagine why the crew had to scuttle to make their ship go down and out of British hands. Karl, I meant to mention that in my original post but forgot and didn't wa...
