Code Name of Tirpitz Operation

Post by José M. Rico »

Hello,
What was the German code name of the naval operation involving the battleship Tirpitz on 6-9 March 1942?
This is sometimes referred to as Operation "Sportpalast", but "Sportpalast" was actually the transfer of the Prinz Eugen, Admiral Scheer, and escorting destroyers from Germany to Trondheim two weeks before.
I have been checking out different war diaries and reports but could not find any code name for the Tirpitz sortie. :(

See what wiki says: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Sportpalast

Remember, the sources and footnotes are breadcrumbs.

Wikipedia is wrong here.
"Sportpalast" happened on 21-23 February 1942, and has nothing to do with Tirpitz's March sortie.

Hello Mr. Rico,
you are right. Sportpalast has nothing to do with Tirpitz's March operation against PQ12/QP8. AFAIK no codename was assigned to it.

For those interested, I have just added the following page to the website:

http://www.kbismarck.com/naval-operations.html

I'm sure I have missed some naval operations and sorties, so feel free to remind me.
