St. George's Day
St. George's Day
May I wish all forum members and subscribers a happy St. George's day!

This issue of a bank holiday has always been a problem for our beloved Labour Government. Because St. Georges Day falls very close to the May Day bank holiday and comes between it and Easter the logical thing to do would be to scrap the May Day holiday (because of its association with communism, revolutionary socialism and national socialism) and replace it with St. George's Day.
But there is no way that Labour will scrap the May Day holiday. Labour says it supports a St. George's Day holiday but in a recent parliamentary vote Labour MP's voted the proposal down - because it mean't scrapping the May Day holiday.
If we British voters have the sense to elect a UKIP government - problem solved.
Incidently if we do need an extra bank hoilday then how about Trafalgar Day in October?

I may be wrong (I haven't researched it), but I think Mayday was a traditional celebration in this country - maypoles and all that fertility nonsense (they got up to some interesting stuff in the fields after the days activities I believe!!). The time we really need a bank holiday is the long run from September up to Christmas (also a pagan festival), which just seems to drag on and on for ever.

I totally agree guys.
We do need a bank holiday between September and Christmas.
Its crackers having all those bank holidays in and around April/May and then having nothing more till August.
Fingers crossed that when old Lizzie (The Queen) pops her clogs that we'll get a holiday

God created the world in 6 days.........and on the 7th day he built the Scharnhorst
I don't think the French (or Spanish) would be too offended, as the French officially participated in the Trafalgar celebrations held in 2005. President Chirac was once recently asked by a BBC journalist about whether the English should celebrate the event as a public holiday and his response was a shrugg of the shoulders....
Given also that the Germans participated in the Normandy rememberances of the 60th anniversary of the D Day landings I don't think that these old battles are such a problem for today's generation.
Incidently the French have never made any comment about one of London's railway stations being called Waterloo....
No, the only obstacle to having Trafalgar Day as a public holiday is the Labour Party. And the answer to that is to vote them out of office.
