Dropping food supplies in Holland

Post by paul.mercer »

Gentlemen,
Just read a short article about how the RAF flew to Holland and dropped food supplies to people who were staving at the very end of the war.
I understand that although they were flying at very low altitude over still active German flack positions they were not fired upon and I wonder if this was arranged between the UK and a neutral Government like Switzerland or Sweden or via the Red Cross.
Can anyone enlighten me?

Probably through the Red Cross via Switzerland.

Another factor possibly to bear in mind was that the outcome of the war at that stage would be obvious to the flak officers and men, even the Waffen SS at that point sometimes hesitated to commit acts of war crimes because they knew that retribution, whether legal or otherwise was just around the corner.
