Hi! Would you post one plan or model pict? I can´t find none.AThompson wrote: ↑Mon Jun 26, 2023 10:48 amMainly as every deck plan or model I've seen of a three-decker First rate, or a 74-gun ship of the line, has the skylight in the poop, so that the captain's great cabin below the poop can benefit from natural light, in addition to the stern windows.marcelo_malara wrote: ↑Sun Jun 25, 2023 9:36 pm
And why did you mention skylights on poop decks? Did you see any model or ship plan?
I've never seen reference to a skylight on the quarterdeck. Gratings maybe, but not a skylight.

I think that it is a fair modern ship. She has a traveler in the boom´s sheet. It is common in modern sailboats, and I was totally ignorant that it existed in the age of sail, but I am not sure it was in use in the XVIII century.OpanaPointer wrote: ↑Mon Jun 26, 2023 11:55 pm Not sure. This is a modern version of the said piece:

I've never seen reference to a skylight on the quarterdeck. Gratings maybe, but not a skylight.
Here's a model showing Nelson's (or rather Hardy's) Victory's quarterdeck.

Her poop with the skylight for the captain's great cabin

Another showing the gratings on her quarterdeck and skylight on the poop

Here's a, granted early, 60-gun ship-of-the-line showing the grating on the quarterdeck and what looks like a skylight or grating on the poop

I will ask all the questions on all things floaty.

This is interesting. If that's a grating in the poop, surely that would mean the captain's cabin is getting soaked every time it rains, or when a wave comes over the bulwark.

Thanks, had not noticed it till now. And my books do not even mention them. May be it is a latter add on on her career? The definitive reference would be the Anatomy of the ship volume.AThompson wrote: ↑Tue Jun 27, 2023 11:52 amSure.marcelo_malara wrote: ↑Mon Jun 26, 2023 3:59 pmHi! Byron! Can you help us?
As a side note, these I had marked with a red arrow are the belaying pins. They are used to make fast the running rigging. You have them at the base of the masts, to make fast the ropes that come down close to the mast, and in the base of the shrouds, to make fast ropes that come close to them.

OR there's a cover for it. Canvas at least, something more substantial, liked a wooden cover, depending on the time and funds.

-she is not a man-of-war, due to the exposed helm.
-the grating gives access to the tiller and the ropes that controlled it

Re: Cabins in a First Rate
Or that it is not a grating at all, just a raised floor to keep the helmsman feet on a not-slipping surface in heavy weather.

This is the steering wheel of the Cisne Branco, Brazilian´s navy tall ship. Look at the "grating" on which the helmsman stands.

If she is a man-of war there's an auxiliary helm down there, probably on the same axis as the upper one.
