Having read a bit of AoS naval history, it is fair to say the Real Armada did not lack courage.

No, Real Armada means Royal (Spanish) Navy.

I would dare say that the correct phrase should be "to the last shot" as shell had not been introduce to the service yet :D

Yes, you are right, I was just quoting Admiral Tovey's words about the Bismarck. The voyage of the Bismarck has in fact some similarities with that of the Glorioso. A naval pursuit, a ship blowing up, final defeat...
