Who has seniority?

Post by Fatboy Coxy »

Both HMS Stronghold and HMS Thanet were old S class destroyers built just after the first world war and based at Singapore when Japan attacked in December 1941.

HMS Stronghold was commanded by Lt Cdr Giles Robert Pretor-Pinney
Promoted
15 Sep 1918 – Lt
15 Sep 1926 – Lt Cdr (retired)
22 Apr 1920 (retired)

HMS Thanet was commanded by Lt Cdr Bernard Sydney Davies
Promoted
15 Dec 1920 – Lt
15 Dec 1928 – Lt Cdr
28 Jan 1939 (retired)

On the above data, Pretor-Pinney has over two years seniority at Lt Cdr, but does his being retired from 1920 impact on that, given Davies must have continued as a serving officer?

Also, I presume being retired placed them in the Royal Naval Reserve, but I haven’t seen RNR against their name anywhere.

They were both designated as LtCdr Rtd, not RNR. I'm guessing Pretor-Pinney had seniority, but it's a good question...so, I just can't say definitely.
